WHITTEMORE — Former Whittemore-Prescott and Standish-Sterling football players will put on the pads at the W-P football stadium Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. to raise money for both schools’ football programs.
Troy Harrison, a W-P alum who has been organizing the game, said he got the idea to coordinate an alumni game after seeing it done at other schools.
“Mio and Atlanta did one,” he said. “That’s where I heard of it.”
Money will be raised at the game through player registration fees, admission and concessions, Harrison said.
“Each player pays $75 to play, and that goes straight to the program, and Standish is the same,” he said. “All their players’ money goes right to the program.”
Admission for the public is $7, he added, and the two programs will split those funds. Concession sales will go to W-P, Harrison said.
“If everything goes well, we’ll have another one next year at Standish, and they’ll get concessions,” he said.
W-P currently has a few open roster spots, according to Harrison. Justin Migut, who is coordinating players for the SSC squad, said there are a also some open spots for Panther alumni.
“We have about 35 right now, and both of our maxes are 40,” he said. “So we’re looking for a couple more people.”
Migut and Harrison said they have players who graduated in the mid-90s who will be strapping on their helmets and hitting the field under the lights.
According to Migut, the excitement among players is growing.
“They’re pumped up and ready to get back in pads,” he said.
Harrison said a little bit of trash talk has also started to swirl.
“Everybody’s having fun with it,” he said.
Players will have practice and get their pads and helmets earlier in the day Saturday, Harrison said. During this time players will also sign waivers and have to pay their money, he said.
The current Cardinals’ coaching staff, along with former coach Kyle Tobin, will coach W-P, Harrison said.
SSC’s coaching staff will be headed up by current head coach Paul Walderzak, Migut said.
