AGS girls’ nearly knock off undefeated Posen

POSEN — AuGres-Sims pushed Posen's unbeaten North Star League run to the brink Monday, but the Vikings made the plays they needed to down the stretch to take a 35-33 victory over the Wolverines and preserve their two-game lead over Arenac Eastern.

The Vikings focused much of their energy on slowing down the Wolverines' Emily Lutz, who scored a season low four points on just seven shots. Lutz, however, had nine assists on the Wolverines' 12 made baskets.

"It was frustrating," said AGS coach Gordie Ostrander. "We were right there."

Victoria Wozniak scored five of her nine points in the fourth quarter after the two teams entered the final period tied at 27-27.

The Wolverines, though, had more turnovers than shot attempts in the fourth quarter and finished with 29 turnovers in the game.

There was plenty of frustration for AGS that the three-person officiating crew was all based in Posen, though Ostrander said the Wolverines had plenty of opportunities that they didn't take advantage of.

"It's hard to point fingers when you have 29 turnovers," he said. "But we got called more for traveling tonight than the rest of the season combined. Even so, if we make some free throws and don't throw the ball away after rebounding their missed free throws, we probably would have won. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

"We made some mistakes, but our effort was awesome."

Tina Mulka led Posen (11-1, 9-0 NSL) with 14 points, with Wozniak adding nine.

Tasha Trombley had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines (8-6, 4-4), with Adriane Swaffield adding eight points.
