AGS boys get first “W” over Mio in 13 years

AUGRES — AuGres-Sims fell short in its bid to defeat Mio for the first time in 13 years in January, but Tuesday the Wolverines left nothing to chance.

Playing with the kind of discipline that was lacking in a 51-48 loss at Mio four weeks ago, the Wolverines pounded the ball inside to Travis Byard, and the sophomore responded by equaling his season high with 21 points as AGS topped the Thunderbolts 59-42.

The Wolverines had their best shooting night (46 percent) since the opening game of the season and had 15 assists on their 22 baskets, as well as playing aggressive defense. The combination of not settling for outside shots and scoring baskets in transition after forcing turnovers led to the Wolverines' first win over Mio since 1996.

"We're starting to play better," said AGS coach Gordie Ostrander. "We still made some mistakes, but we're making better decisions and I thought we played hard the whole night."

The Wolverines built a 23-14 lead midway through the second quarter behind Byard's 10 points, but 3-pointers by Jonathan Allwardt and K.C. Fox helped Mio close the half on a 10-3 run to get within 27-24 at the half.

The Wolverines' defense came through in the third quarter as they held Mio to a single basket by Justin Kann. Byard had eight points in the quarter, while Chad Taylor scored twice off steals and finished the quarter with a 3-pointer for a 42-26 lead.

Mio never got any closer than 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Taylor finished with 22 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, with Byard adding 21 on 9-of-15 shooting. Alex Lutz added seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Wolverines improved to 8-9 (6-6 North Star League).

Clarence Buhlman led Mio (5-10, 5-7) with 12 points, with Allwardt and Fox adding eight apiece.
