Au GRES — Former Au Gres-Sims School District students will take to the gridiron Oct. 13 for the first fundraising alumni football game.
Chris Redburn, who alongside Nicol Kubik has organized the game, said the goal of the game is to raise funds for AGS sports programs, after the athletics department has faced funding difficulties over the past couple years. He said the game is not just to raise money for the school’s football program, but all its sports programs.
Redburn said alumni have gotten together to play friendly games on Sunday afternoons in the past, but this is the first game that will take place at the AGS field with referees for fundraising purposes.
“We want to do a game for every sport, with the proceeds going to the athletics department,” Redburn said.
The two teams will be comprised of alumni from any year who are willing to play. Redburn said he has some players who graduated as recently as 2012, while others graduated in the 1990s.
“With football it’s a little easier, since you could have 20 people on each side,” Redburn said. “And if you’re short, everyone will just be very sore the next day.”
Redburn said the game itself is primarily for AGS alumni, though people who have been associated with the school in the past — such as football coaches and teachers — are welcome as well. For future events, he said Arenac Eastern students who are currently playing on the Au Gres-Sims Wolverines team would be considered alumni and would be welcome to play as well.
The AGS band will probably perform at halftime, Redburn said, and the teams will be determined the day of the game.
“We’re trying to get the community involved,” Redburn said. “The local community can come out and be entertained.”
Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. The game will feature a $4 admission fee. Redburn said there is a $10 fee to play, along with a liability waiver. He said there is an Au Gres-Sims Alumni Association page set up on Facebook where people can sign up to play or confirm their attendance.
