AE’s undefeated run comes to an end at Posen
Special to the independent
POSEN — Arenac Eastern's unbeaten run to start the season ended Jan. 6 at Posen as the Vikings pulled away in the final minutes to a 34-30 victory over the Eagles to claim sole possession of the North Star League's top spot.
There's still a long way to go in the season, and AE coach Butch Beckham hopes the Eagles learned from the experience.
"We haven't been in these kinds of games," Beckham said. "We were up by a point in the fourth quarter and had been going back and forth. But we didn't play with the composure and poise that we have.
"Maybe because we were playing for first place in a tight game, we didn't play our normal game."
The Eagles led 16-15 at halftime of the low-scoring affair.
Beckham said a lack of patience at the offensive end eventually proved costly.
"Our shot selection wasn't as good as it has been," he said. "Plus we turned the ball over too much. We had a lot of little things we did wrong that cost you in games, especially against good teams.
"We'll learn something from this. That's the key to improving."
Chelsea Dery scored 13 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals for the Eagles (6-1, 3-1 North Star League). Briana Dery added seven points and five rebounds and Maddie Nelson had six points and five rebounds.
Janice Ciarkowski led Posen (5-1, 4-0) with 11 points. Lindsay Ponik added 10 and Victoria Wozniak had seven.
AE travels to Mio on Friday, while Posen is at Hale.
