AE wallops Akron-Fairgrove
AKRON-FAIRGROVE - Dec. 2, 2008 - Arenac Eastern got off to a flying start in its season-opener Tuesday, taking a 16-2 lead after one quarter and coasting past Akron-Fairgrove 45-18.
"For the first game I thought we played pretty good," said AE coach Butch Beckham. "We played well for three of the four quarters. They pressed us, but we were able to get them out of that pretty early."
The Eagles led 28-10 at the half after Akron made a pair of long 3-pointers to slightly narrow the gap just before halftime. The Eagles struggled through a one-point third quarter, but allowed just two points in the period, then pulled away with a 16-6 fourth quarter.
Chelsea Dery led the Eagles with 22 points and 18 rebounds.
"She's really been stepping up," Beckham said. "She played very well in the scrimmage and again (Tuesday).
Marcy Langstaff added 10 points, Brianna Dery had 11 steals and Danielle Jurek added nine assists.
AE (1-0) travels to Atlanta (1-0) on Friday for both teams' North Star League opener.
