AE falls short in comeback effort
ARENAC EASTERN - Oct. 21, 2008 - Arenac Eastern's volleyball team didn't go down easily Tuesday, but a lost lead in the first game of their North Star League match with Fairview. AE fell 26-24, 25-16, 24-26, 12-25, 15-10, fighting back to tie the match after Fairview was serving for match point and a sweep in the third game.
"I'm real proud of the girls," said Eastern coach Hannah Neil. "They are very close, and they pulled themselves together after losing the first two games."
AE took a 16-6 in the first game behind a huge game from Chelsea Dery, who served five straight aces in one stretch and added a pair of kills. AE also was up 24-20, but two aces by Tia Rogers and a couple of emphatic kills by Kayla Weaver, including the game-winner, gave Fairview the comeback win.
Fairview never trailed in the second game and held leads of 23-21 and 24-22 in the third game. Fairview hit the ball out on the potential match-winner, and Eastern finished it off on Taylor Jurek's ace and Chelsea Dery's block.
Armed with momentum, AE broke out from a 5-5 tie in the fourth game to coast to the 25-12 win and led 5-3 in the fifth and final game.
Fairview's Tamara Wyse put her team on top for good with a string of tough serves, including three aces and several that AE struggled to handle. By the time Eastern regained service, Fairview led 12-6 and even a couple of points from Erin Ecker only got her team to within 13-10 before a pair of AE errors finished the game off.
AE dropped to 2-14-1 (2-8 NSL) while Fairview improved to 2-9 in league play.
