AE explodes in second half to beat Posen
ARENAC EASTERN — Arenac Eastern exploded for all 36 of its points in the second half on Friday to earn its first North Star League victory since 2006 with a 36-3 homecoming win over Posen.
Five turnovers in the first half, kept both teams off the scoreboard, but the Eagles' halftime adjustments paid off in a big way.
"Once we scored on got the momentum, we really got into a rhythm," said AE coach Mark Machulis. "It was a physical game; they hit us hard.
"I was real pleased with the kids. They'd gotten kind of tentative (after two big losses), but they broke out of that. It was a confidence thing, and I think they got some of that back."
Caleb Rahn opened up the second half with a 48-yard kickoff return, and that set up Caleb Whitney's 6-yard touchdown run that put the Eagles up for good. Graham Morgan ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Another Whitney added two more touchdowns -- both from four yards out -- Graham Morgan added a 4-yard run and Kyle Zobel had a 12-yard run to cap AE's scoring.
Posen hit a 30-yard field goal with eight seconds to play to break the shutout.
Whitney finished with 161 rushing yards on 15 carries, with Morgan adding 124 yards on 17 carries. Morgan was also 1-of-5 passing for eight yards, with Joey Kramer adding a 10-yard completion, both to Nick Phelan. Phelan also caught a 2-point conversion pass.
John Chmura had 14 solo tackles, including a sack, and Al Bilacic had 12 tackles. Morgan added five tackles and two fumble recoveries and Sam Phelan added five tackles.
The Eagles (2-3, 1-3 North Star League) head to Atlanta on Friday.
"It's always tough to play up there," Machulis said. "They run the T like Hale does. But the kids are confident, we're getting more healthy and we have a bye the following week, so we feel good about it."
Posen fell to 0-4 (0-2).
