AKRON — A game but shorthanded Akron-Fairgrove squad was no match for Arenac Eastern's softball team Thursday, which swept its season-opening doubleheader with the Vikings 12-0 and 20-0.

Akron-Fairgrove started the afternoon with just nine players, including several playing their first high school softball games, and played most of the second game after their pitcher was injured in the first inning running to first base.

"She wasn't bad," said AE coach Mike Vogl. "She tried pitching in the second inning, faced three batters but was unable to continue...

"They had no one else that could pitch so needless to say the last two innings were a struggle."

Either way the Vikings weren't able to do much with AE pitchers Shawna Tacey and Maddie Nelson. Tacey tossed a six-inning two-hitter, striking out six. AE scored five runs in the first inning and was never threatened.

Chelsea Dery had two triples, scored three times and had two RBIs while Tacey and Kaytlin Fitzgerald each added two hits. Tacey and Briana Dery each had doubles.

In the second game, Maddie Nelson threw a three-inning one-hitter, striking out five. The Eagles scored 11 runs in the first inning to break the game open right away and added seven in the third to end it early.

Chelsea Dery had three hits, three RBIs and scored three times while Briana Dery added two doubles and four RBIs. Jamie Rowbottom, Erin Ecker and Ashley Navarre had two hits apiece, including doubles for Rowbottom and Ecker. Ecker and Morgan Heideman each drove in two runs.

The Eagles (2-0) hosts Oscoda on Monday, Apr. 13.
