8th ranked Cards fly by Oscoda
WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Sep. 12, 2008 - Whittemore-Prescott scored four touchdowns in a three-minute span of the first half Friday to key a 61-8 victory over Oscoda in a battle of football independents.
W-P quarterback Austin Swanson tossed three touchdown passes in the final 2:17 of the first quarter -- 11 and 17 yards to Tristan Kohlhoff and 34 yards to Billy Raushi -- and Chris Downes added a 24-yard run 41 seconds in the second quarter to build a 33-0 lead.
The three touchdown-throws were the only completions of the night for Swanson, who finished 3-of 4 for 62 yards.
"Austin only threw four passes, but he made them count," said W-P coach Kevin Frederick. "I don't think I've ever seen three touchdown passes thrown in such a short span of time."
W-P opened the scoring as Downes returned a block punt six yards and booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
"Our defense set the tone early," Frederick said. "We had some big passing plays in the first quarter that gave us a big lead."
Matt Ackerman added a three-yard run in the second quarter that made it 41-0 at the half and scored on a 59-yarder in the fourth quarter. Dylan DeBoever added a seven-yard run and Stanley Matuszak capped the scoring with a 34-yard interception return midway through the fourth quarter.
Oscoda reached the scoreboard when Tom Schonfeld broke loose for a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Ackerman led W-P with 168 yards on 14 carries with Downes rushing for 62 yards on three attempts. Downes was also in on eight tackles, with Tommy Miracle adding seven and Kohlhoff and Kyle Hensley adding six apiece.
Justin Cain led the Owls with 58 yards on 19 carries, with Schonfeld adding seven on four carries.
W-P (3-0) travels to Flint Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 19, while Oscoda (0-3) takes on Grand Rapids North Pointe Christian at Alma College on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
