40 foreclosed properties going up for auction

TAWAS — Arenac County will look to sell 40 tax-foreclosed properties and recoup nearly $90,000 in unpaid taxes during a foreclosed property auction at the Tawas Community Center Aug. 23.

Treasurer Dennis Stawowy said the majority of the properties are wooded or undeveloped parcels, but there are six properties with houses on them.

“None of them were homesteaded homes,” he said. “They were all like rental properties. They are all vacant currently.”

Stawowy said for the most part, the homes on the foreclosed properties are in fair condition.

“There are four or five that with a little cleanup a person could move into,” he said. “Most of the homes are in pretty decent shape.”

One notable property without a home is in Moffatt Township, where 80 acres of vacant property are available. Stawowy said the starting price — back taxes owed for the last three years — would be $7,700. He said the county land bank also has its eyes set on a property in Standish Township where a burned-down house sits.

“I know the bid is like $2,000, but if nobody buys it, I’m hoping with the land bank proceeds we can get it taken down,” he said.

The auction will include properties in Arenac, Ogemaw and Iosco counties. Stawowy said interested buyers can visit tax-sale.info and then navigate to Arenac County properties and see what’s available.

“We have pictures of all the properties,” he said. “We have Google Earth locations so you can do the 360 views.”

Back taxes owed are also shown on the website, Stawowy said.

Potential buyers can register for the auction on tax-sale.info, but preregistration is not required, Stawowy said.

The auction is scheduled to begin at noon Aug. 23.
