ARENAC COUNTY — The Arenac County Conservation District is going to the birds this month during its annual meeting by bringing back Joe Rogers of the Wildlife Recovery Association to present his “Live Birds of Prey” show.

Audience members will have the opportunity to get an up close and personal look at nine different species of birds, Rogers said.

Rogers said he will talk about the sounds the birds make, how they interact with people, and what people can do to help local wildlife.

“So many problems animals face are directly related to people,” Rogers said.

Along with research and rehabilitation programs, education is one of the three fundamental aspects of the Wildlife Recovery Association, he said.

Rogers said that Arenac County usually consists of a good outdoors group of people who are more likely than larger cities to have interacted with various species of birds, but there are still plenty of things people might not know about the wildlife in Michigan.

For instance, Rogers said that Michigan has 11 different species of owls, and only four of those species actually hoot.

These interesting facts and more will be included in Rogers’ presentation.

The Arenac Conservation District’s Annual Meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the Saganing Tribal Center. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and is $5 per person. Various awards and presentations will begin at 7 p.m., and Rogers’ presentation will begin at 8 p.m.
